We usually think that stress is something bad, but “without it we wouldn’t be alive”, says the Canadian Neuroscientist Sonia Lupien, founder of the Centre for Studies on Human Stress at the Douglas Hospital in Montreal, Canada. It arose as a mechanism to survive in extreme situations and today, with a very different environment to that of our forefathers, it continues to play an important role.
Apart from being an omnipresent topic in western societies, stress is a physiological reaction caused by the perception of adverse or threatening situations. Throughout the evolution of our species – and of many other animals – stress reactions have helped us to survive.
Thanks to stress, our muscles gained extra strength to flee the lion and our brain had help to remember the cave where our predator was hiding. But our cites have little to do with the African savannah, and in our civilised world, stress has negative consequences.
Do more neurones die when we are stressed? Are our memory and learning affected by stress? What strategies can we put into practice to tackle it? Redes had the pleasure of interviewing Sonia Lupien, Professor of Psychiatry at the Université de Montréal, Canada.

Thank you so much, this was very interesting. I was actually born in Spain ( not telling you when though!) but was moved around various parts of europe and lastly settled in the UK when I was 7. I dont remember an awful lot of the few years I was in spain, but the delicious smell of spanish food always seems to get me going or something. Funny, how I dont remember anything except the smells, isn’t it! I even found a whole website dedicated to spanish recipe, which gave me great delight and thought I really should to share. Anyway, thank you again. I’ll get my son to add your feed to my rss thing…
Trough my life and various occupations that i went trough, different people of different backgrounds and now for more than four years on, Since completion of my HSL (Health And Safety Laboratory Training Course,i’ already introduced to many companies The Management Standards approach that has been developed by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to reduce the levels of Work-related stress reported by British workers. The overall aim is to bring about a reduction in the number of employees who go off sick, or who cannot perform well at work because of stress.I’ want employers to work with employees and their representatives to implement the Stress Management Standards and introduce a process of continuous improvement. This will be good for employees and good for business. The Management Standards approach presented on my seminars gives managers the help they need to achieve these aims.It demonstrates good practice trough risk assessment, allows measurement of the current situation using surveys and other techniques, and promotes active discussion with employees to help decide upon the practical improvements that can be made. and your video added more knowledge towards helping others.
Thank you Sonia
